Miami
International Airport alternates with JFK Airport in New York as the
busiest international gateway in the United States, and is by far the
busiest portal to and from Latin America and the only one with flights
to and from Cuba. An airfield was built on the site 8 miles (13 km)
northwest of downtown Miami in the 1930s and named for Congressman J.
Mark Wilcox; it was taken over by the military during World War II and
became a civilian airport in 1945. It was the headquarters of Eastern
Air Lines, and is or has been a hub for several air carriers.
